    Our Permitting & Licensing team is actively involved in the current historic changes affecting our power industry, and is seeking an Environmental Specialist to join us as we help our clients navigate the U.S. energy market and environmental regulations.


    • Apply professional environmental/engineering skills to meet project team and client needs for defining, evaluating, and implementing environmental compliance and permitting projects
    • Review and implement regulatory requirements as they apply to specific projects and develop strategies to implement cost-effective compliance plans
    • Prepare site-specific studies to evaluate the suitability of a site for a proposed fossil fuel power plant, wind energy farm, solar generating station, substation, or transmission line
    • Work with project engineers to ensure projects are designed and developed using criteria that recognize all relevant environmental requirements
    • Prepare permit applications and interface with state and local permitting agencies
    • Prepare complex technical reports including site selection studies, environmental and social impact assessments, compliance audits, and regulatory reviews
    • Participate in knowledge sharing through Sargent & Lundy's "Communities of Practice"


    Essential skills and experience:

    • This position requires a BS in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field, MS preferred
    • Three or more years of experience in environmental compliance and permitting for complex industrial projects
    • Familiarity with environmental laws and regulations that apply to large industrial facilities, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
    • Environmental permitting experience
    • Specific experience in one or more of the following fields: major source air permitting; NPDES wastewater discharge permitting; or environmental impact assessments
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to interact and multitask with project team members, clients, and regulatory agencies


    Valued but not required skills and experience:

    • Ambient air quality impact modeling and familiarity with AERMOD and/or CALPUFF models
    • Familiarity with meteorology and climatological data analysis to determine frequency of certain meteorological conditions based on raw data manipulation (examples include, fogging, icing, heavy rain, high wet-bulb temperatures, and frequency of extreme weather conditions)
    • Proficiency in ArcGIS mapping and experience in developing interactive maps showing critical environmental resources such as wetlands, critical habitats, and other sensitive receptors; Certification or coursework in GIS is a plus
