Our Environmental Permitting & Licensing team actively supports numerous environmental compliance and permitting projects affecting the power generation, transmission and distribution, and natural gas industries.  We are seeking an Environmental Specialist with the ability to identify regulatory requirements, prepare environmental permit applications, conduct compliance evaluations, and interact with regulatory agencies to support a broad range of power-related projects.  The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks and supporting multiple project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Apply professional environmental knowledge and skills to support project team and client needs for defining, evaluating, and implementing environmental compliance and permitting projects
  • Identify the environmental requirements as they apply to electric power related projects, including electric power generating projects, substations, transmission lines, natural gas pipelines, and compressor stations
  • Review environmental regulatory requirements as they apply to specific projects, and work with our project engineers to ensure projects are designed and developed using criteria that recognize all relevant environmental requirements
  • Prepare permit applications and interface with federal, state and local permitting agencies
  • Travel to client offices and plant site locations, and act as a liaison between project team members, clients, and regulatory agencies on a wide range of environmental projects
  • Participate in industry conferences, prepare published articles and papers, and conduct internal and external presentations summarizing regulatory requirements
  • Participate in knowledge sharing through Sargent & Lundy's "Communities of Practice"

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

  • This position requires a BS in Environmental Science, Ecology, Ecosystem Management, Natural Resources & Conservation, or related field
  • Familiarity with environmental laws and regulations that apply to large industrial facilities, including the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, and Clean Water Act
  • Three or more years of specific experience in at least one of the following fields:
    • Conducting federal and state environmental impact assessments, wetland delineations, or threatened and endangered species surveys;
    • Preparation of environmental plans such as wetland mitigation plans, threatened & endangered species mitigation plans, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), or Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans
  • Preparation of environmental permit applications, such as U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 wetlands permitting, Section 401 Water Quality Certification permitting, or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) discharge permitting
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact and multitask with project team members, clients, and regulatory agencies

 Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Experience conducting environmental site assessments
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS to develop interactive maps showing critical environmental resources such as wetlands, critical habitats, and other sensitive receptors.  Certification or coursework in GIS is a plus
  • Familiarity with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standards
