Responsibilities

Sargent & Lundy Geotechnical Engineers have a high level of responsibility in providing detailed engineering services to project teams on electric power projects in both domestic and international markets, which includes nuclear and fossil fueled generation, renewables, power delivery, and energy consulting.  Work responsibilities include:   

  • Provide designs and work closely with all design disciplines throughout the entire organization
  • Prepare specifications for subsurface investigations
  • Prepare bid tabulations for subsurface investigation proposals
  • Conduct on-site quality surveillance of subsurface exploration programs and pile installation and testing
  • Assist in establishing laboratory testing programs
  • Prepare detailed calculations to develop soil parameters for design of foundations, both static and dynamic conditions
  • Work with Designers to accurately portray technical information on drawings
  • Review vendor documents for conformity with specifications
  • Prepare technical specifications for the installation of deep foundations
  • Participate in dam and dike examinations
  • Occasional domestic and international travel in order to witness geotechnical field work

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience:

  • BSCE (MSCE preferred) from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong background and coursework emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Must have successfully passed the FE exam
  • Familiarity with design tools and software, such as LPILE, ALLPILE, Slope/W, and proficient with Excel, and Word
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Familiarity with ASTM standards and IBC requirements
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and effective writing skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel, both domestic and international

Valued but not required experience:

  • Internship or other job-related exposure to geotechnical engineering, including experience with some of the following: subsurface investigation, development of soil parameters for shallow foundations, site class determination, pile design, slope stability analysis, sheet pile design, site dewatering and/or observation of earthwork for foundations, and other construction activities
  • Experience in preparing geotechnical calculations
  • Experience in reporting on-site geotechnical investigation and construction work
